I had a job interview at another law firm two days before this firm. The person I interviewed with said that they don’t socialize with others in the building. For example, there was going to be a building wide ice cream social, but that law firm would not be participating. I thought, “I can’t work in an environment like this.”. Then they wanted:
an official transcript
an official SAT score (WTF? I took that 7 years ago)
writing samples
references
GUESS WHAT!? I got a better job, that didn’t ask for any of those documents, AND I GOT TO GO TO THE ICE CREAM SOCIAL!
I’ve really never felt so lucky. And grateful.
Albums I have “hand sold” at Books & Notions:
Neon Bible Arcade Fire
Cease To Begin Band of Horses*
Armchair Apocrypha Andrew Bird*
Shepard’s Dog Iron and Wine (twice)
Two Way Monologue Sondre Lerche
* I have actually never listened to these myself.
And I’d like to find you, right now:
listening to Cat Power
shopping at American Eagle*^
hanging out at a suburban Starbucks with/like a townie
* May have happened this weekend.
^ Thank you AE for making the “eagle logo” smaller and not easily detectable to the naked. Antropologie style at better prices!
Objects I’ve physically used for strength in the last week:
the copy machine at the law firm*
the floor at the law firm
a music listening station at Books & Notions*^
the corner by the front door of the law firm
the kitchen sink*
* tears in my eyes
^ playing Ryan Adams’ Heartbreaker
(it felt right)
2. Previous to reading the article, I had just watched Crimes and Misdemeanors for the first time. I do not agree with Mia Farrow. Supposedly, Woody Allen wrote C&M in response to what he thought was a too happy, neat and tidy ending for Hannah and Her Sisters.
3. I thought Crimes and Misdemeanors was too much like Match Point, yet just different enough where I believe Match Point was Woody Allen’s way of making C&M better.
4. A customer at Books&Notions this week spent sometime going through our Criterion Collection section. We had a lovely discussion about the connection between Ingmar Bergman’s films and Woody Allen’s work. That costumer and I both agree Cries and Whispers is intense.
5. Lastly, I was telling a story the other day to someone. It’s a story I’ve told before because it makes people laugh, and that is all a story should ever do. As I was telling it for the first time to this person, I suddenly remembered part of the situation that I had forgotten. I didn’t add it to the story, but the flashback was like something out of a Woody Allen movie. You know the scene: there is no audio, just the short snip of a scene that the character is remembering. It’s used in both Crimes and Misdemeanors and my favorite Woody Allen film Interiors. Now I believe it is actually something the human brain does.
This post probably only entertained Angela, who I owe a phone call.
