I remember taking professional pictures for my first dance rehearsal when I was in first grade. There were instructions to the mothers to put make-up on us. This was very early 90s Western Pennsylvania, not an episode of Toddlers & Tiaras. I remember my mother talking to another mother. They both said about the same thing, “I don’t wear make-up! What am I suppose to put on her?” The answer to that was clear gloss and some blush.
Almost twenty years later, I have graduated from clear gloss and blush. I took this picture as I was getting ready for the Yale Law School Prom. I labeled everything in Flickr, but since you guys never click over, here it is listed:
Benefit Dallas Make-up Palette (with my two favorite eyeshadows that they don’t make anymore!)
Avon blush brush (anything Avon is a gift from Grammie)
Avon eyeshadow brush (to apply concealer powder)
Wet ‘n Wild red lip liner pencil
Sonia Kashuk eyeshadow brush
MAC pre-moistened make-up remover q-tips
Sonia Kashuk concealer brush
Bobbi Brown Corrector
Bobbi Brown Concealer and powder
NARS Orgasm blush
SATU Daisy perfume (from Anthropologie)
Stila Kitten eyeshadow
Smashbox mascara (sucks, sucks, do not buy!)
L’Oreal mascara
MAC Penultimate liquid eyeliner
Maybelline pencil sharpener
Revlon eyelash curler
MAC “Red She Said” lipstick
And this was all for getting ready for the dance. There are a few everyday lipglosses and shadows that did not make an appearance.
McKatie has also started to experiment with make-up recently, and honestly she is doing much better than I am. But to educate myself, I’m using tutorials on YouTube. This is the one I used to apply the liquid eyeliner:
Will it be odd when my daughter shows up for her dance rehearsal portraits sporting the Amy Winehouse eye?
For the liberal arts degrees. Now, a series:
black cotton leggings
short black boots
tunic length, flowy, floral print blouses
scarves
headlamps*
*Three undergrad girls crashed the Yale Law School Prom Saturday night. And one was wearing a headlamp. I silently observed as the Boyfriend said, “So there is this trend among the undergrads to wear headlamps, like the geeks in Sixteen Candles. They wear them during the day, too.”
For Liberal Arts Degrees! (It’s been a while since I ripped off a song title for a blog post title.)
What girls at college are wearing, according to Bradley:
rainboots
Longchamp bags
Tory Burch Reva flat
Don’t think he knew the proper names of these items, sans rainboots. He described them to Katie and I, as we made him walk through the Neiman Marcus shoe department Friday.
Movies I am sad were released (in theaters & on DVD) after Valentine’s Day so that the Boyfriend couldn’t watch with me:
Madea Goes To Jail
Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience
High School Musical 3: Senior Year
From Mum:
Girl Scout chocolate covered pretzels
my opened Christmas LifeSavers Story Book
Victoria’s Secret swimsuit catalog (technically addressed to Katie)
J.Crew rewards gift card
1 can Muir Glen Fire Roasted tomatoes
The Rocky Horror Picture Show DVD
6 Chips Ahoy! 100 calorie packs
toothpaste
bar of soap
bottle of body wash
When I told the Boyfriend what I received, he said “That’s quite a hodgepodge.”, but McKatie’s response was “That sounds about right.”
While watching the Grammy’s tonight, I was curious what an indie rock “let’s get it on” style playlist would include. Itunes (link will launch your Itunes) already has one that includes my favorite song ever, “Cars” by Built to Spill.
Their list also includes a couple more songs that I consider very romantic, and hope to play at my wedding one day, but don’t strike me as something that would play in the background of a scene in a quasi-indie film where an earnest teenaged Michael Cera loses his virginity. Just think of that scene in “Donnie Darko” with Joy Division.
So taking a page from Plinky, I give you five songs that would be on my Indie Rock Romance Playlist:
1. “Lover’s Spit” Broken Social Scene
2. “Blindsided” Bon Iver
3. “The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out To Get Us!” Sufjan Stevens
4. “Magic in the Air” Badly Drawn Boy
5. “The Book of Love” The Magnetic Fields
As I spent more time trying to modernize this list to include releases that were less than 4 years old, I got frustrated.
Where’s the hot indie rock make-out music?
Activities my boss has suggested I try, usually in lieu of something a little more exotic:
The Melting Pot
going on a cruise
being a Dallas Cowboys fan (even though she’s lived in Maryland her whole life)
